    SHARON KIHARA

  Sharon  Sharon  Sharon

Sharon Kihara

A seasoned performer, inspirational teacher and exotic personality, Sharon Kihara is known the world over for her avante garde and slightly eccentric artistry, as well as for her skillful, graceful and powerful technique. She comes from a strong background in western dance, beginning with Ballet as a wee tike and continuing to perform with college Modern and Jazz dance companies throughout the nineties. But her true love came in the form of Bellydance, first witnessed by Sharon as a child in it’s Cabaret form, then as Tribal Style in the mid nineties, and, as her mind had been blown beyond all hope for repair, she decided to pursue this art form with full enthusiasm…it wasn’t even a choice at this point.

Since then, Sharon has joined the Bellydance Superstars, beginning in early 2004, and has been touring internationally full-time ever since. She has taught and performed in over 30 countries to date with many more on the horizon, has shared stages with acts such as Missy Elliot, the Black Eyed Peas, and co-headlined with the BDSS on the main stage at the prestigious Glastonbury festival, alongside the White Stripes and Coldplay. She has appeared on television and been featured in radio and media in countless countries, as well as several BDSS DVDs, including her very own Tribal Fusion instructional DVD, which debuted Fall 2007.

When she’s not on tour, Sharon Kihara maintains her yoga practice, being incredibly inspired and fed by Anusara (www.anusara.com); sings, but primarily whilst alone; bangs on her piano a bit; models and works on the occasional multi-media project; scratches dogs and cats behind the ears; watches birds and insects closely; and eats and sleeps. But her favorite pastime is teaching dance and movement, in the form of Tribal Fusion Bellydance workshops and seminars. Sharon is interested in dance kinetics, and therapeutics and is constantly searching for new ideas and information. Sharon enjoys fusing the healing arts with the performing arts, and more than anything loves bearing witness to the beautiful, transcendental changes that occur in the lives of those who embark on the journey that is Bellydance—it is no less than magic.

Infinite Innerspace: Extracting Inspiration From All Places
This class is inspired by my studies of both somatic therapeutics and of Ankoku Butoh (Japanese for black-black dance)- Using story and character building techniques, as well as breathing, visualization and confrontation of basic fears, we will dive in to our creative bodies in order to access the unusual. The focus in this class is to learn to let go of our ideas of who we believe we are, artistically or otherwise, and to become more comfortable with what it feel like to be a conduit and a channel. This can help alleviate stage fright, creative blocks, and fear related to dance. Please bring a yoga mat, comfy clothes, and an open mind.

Fact versus Fiction: Dance, Drums and Women in the Pre-Islamic and Pre-Christian World :: Lecture & Group Discussion
The dance community has long asserted that ‘bellydance’ has historical associations with birth rituals, goddess traditions and sexual rites. In 2010/2011 Donna Mejia researched these connections at Smith College under the guidance of a prominent ethnomusicologist to confirm what is known versus unknown about our Eastern dance and music history. Donna will summarize her findings after reaching back into the Neolithic period (4,000-8,000 B.C.E.) to review evidence found in historical texts, architectural reliefs, epigraphs, sixth-century poetry, and archaeological findings. Donna approaches the topic, and its controversies, through the lenses of cultural-sociological, post-colonial and feminist theories. She presents a full analysis of present factors inhibiting study, and elucidates the ways in which women, power, and dance have been suppressed, exploited, mythologized, and enshrined in dance history.
All Welcome – 100 Students Max – In Theater - 2 hours

Beyond Stationary Practice: Transnational Fusion in Full-Blown Motion
This workshop re-visions the practice of fixed feet and unmoving isolations to an exploration of dynamic traveling progressions. Donna Mejia will present a stimulating class involving strong cardio/pulmonary engagement, firestorm drills, short moving combinations across the floor, and bi-directional/asymmetrical use of the limbs. Donna’s practice sessions offer a globetrotting transnational dance experience, referencing movements from India, West/North/East Africa, China, Latin America, and Donna’s own roots in America’s Creole South. This workshop may be best suited for dancers with at least 2 consistent years of experience in Near Eastern dance. However, adjustments and accommodations will be plentiful for participants with less experience. Athletic attire will work best, and optional footwear (flat dance shoes) and knee pads may be helpful for those with sensitive joints and feet.
Some Movement Background Recommended & Adventurous Beginners Welcome– 47 Students Max – 2 hours

Clarifying Technique: The Art of Refinement and Physical Integrity
A foundation practice should do more than increase circulation and soften muscles. An effective practice has the power to prime the nervous system for quantum leaps forward in training, attune muscular intelligence, reveal unconscious default movement habits and expand the range of motion in joints. Donna Mejia’s workshop details the logic and unfolding of an effective warm up well beyond the basics of token stretches and mild cardio training. Donna will address optimal alignment, joint pliability, breathing techniques, categories of muscular engagement, and safety zones for working sensibly. The information presented can be customized for many levels of ability and experience, including rehabilitation and recovery phases. Participants will benefit most if they can bring the following supplies: a yoga mat, a tennis ball, an old belt, and a notebook.

Le Funk Arabi
Within the dynamic cultural dialog of transnational dance, American Hip Hop music/dance has influenced all popular music around the globe. With each year, more and more brilliant compositions from artists in Near Eastern and North African countries remix our own American hip hop traditions to new heights and possibilities. In this workshop, Donna Mejia details the emerging dance traditions of this dynamic movement and subculture. After a vigorous warm up, dancers will receive a variety of stationary and moving progressions that are intended to give heavy emphasis to the powerful downbeat accents found in hip hop. Donna’s musical playlist includes some of the best Arabic/International funk, hip hop, dubstep, two-step, hard core, mashup, and electronica in the known universe!

Killing Me Softly: Dramatic Accents w/ Softer Intentions
Holding moments of tension or stillness is a powerful performance device that can help the dancer more subtly express her intentions, and nuances in the music. It is important to think about the notes but, what about the spaces in between? We think about our movements, trying to make them complex and difficult, but what about the power of stillness, or a simple line to contrast our intricate torso-work? This class will focus on subtle yet surprising accents, dramatic pauses and pacing. We will build combinations that employ these skills in order to embody the music and inspire a powerful yet nuanced performance.
Intermediate/Advances – 17 Students Max – - Hotel - 2 hours

Shifty Cifti
Olivia of Zafira explores the melodic rhythm Ciftitelli offers many opportunities for the dancer. This 8/4 rhythm is spacious in the first half and staccato in the second. This allows the dancer to express the notes with sharp, quick locks and hits, and the rests with juicy, dreamy sweeps and holds. This workshop will explore different versions of cifti and then construct a series of combinations that fit this versatile rhythm. These combinations can be strung together for a short choreography or they can be used in parts to explore this rhythm on stage and around the campfire!
All Levels – 47 Students Max –2 hours

Cabaret Macabre
Drama, presentation and technique are addressed in this workshop. First, we will build several tribal fusion combinations that incorporate elements of: Tango, Hora, Russian Gypsy and Bellydance torso articulation, while emphasizing technique and alignment. Then, we will use these combos to experiment with timing, emotion, and gesture nuances to bring these combinations to life.
All Levels – 47 Students Max –2 hours

Pedagogy and Practice (Lecture Discussion)
In this lecture, Olivia will share some of her best practices and activities that develop both technique AND the creative side of dance for teachers and dancers who want to “take it to another level”. Olivia will also offer creative strategies for organizing, planning and maintaining a regular personal practice and developing a cohesive teaching experience.

If time permits, Olivia will share some effective movement- based exercises that activate a heightened body awareness, demonstrate proper alignment, and help to identify strengths and challenges in individual dancers. If time doesn’t permit, that’s okay because you can experience them first-hand in her workshops.

Bring a notebook.

DRISHTI DANCERS

Drishti  Drishti

Drishti Dancers

Drishti Dancers have oceans of fun working together to create their own particular style of tribal belly dance. They primarily focus on Improv Tribal Style (ITS), but they’ve been known to dabble in choreography and fusions.

Drishti adores performing in a variety of settings in the Austin area: the usual restaurants and parties, but also variety shows and festivals, such as Sherwood Forest Faire, and they were even once seen parading through downtown on New Year’s Eve. They also enjoy sharing their dance language with others through teaching weekly classes, beginner and intermediate level.

The Drishtis found each other through delightful serendipity, and their dancing together has forged a close-knit tribe. Switch It Up: Elegant Improv Lead Changes
Drishti's favorite way to dance is Improvisational Tribal Style (ITS) with frequent lead changes, so we have created some graceful and dynamic combos that let us switch leads in fun and interesting ways. We especially enjoy moves that let us transition through different formations, like criss-crossing each other as we switch positions, or twirling like the teacup ride at Disneyland! In this class, we will teach you some of our favorite lead changes, which are useful for duets or groups. Journey with us!

JAMES HAZLERIG

James Hazlerig

James Hazlerig is a therapeutic hypnotist and tribal musician who helps artists of all stripes tap into their creativity and enhance their performance.

His first experience with hypnosis occurred when he was born; his mother used trance to control the pain of giving birth. In her words, the pain was there, but it was on the other side of the room, having nothing to do with her. He spent a good part of his first ten days backstage at a theater, and he's been hooked on performing both music and hypnosis ever since.

Hazlerig plays electric fiddle for bellydancers in the Austin-based tribal band Belaharr (www.Belaharr.com). With the Bedlam Bards (www.BedlamBards.com), he travels around the country, performing Celtic music at renaissance festivals and science fiction conventions. In between the music, Hazlerig teaches people how to use their minds to improve their lives at his hypnosis office near Smithville, Texas (www.HarmonyHypnosis.NET).

Dance Like a Goddess: Group Hypnosis
Any true art form is as much mental and spiritual as it is physical. In this interactive workshop, students will use naturally-occurring trance states to enhance creativity, remember choreography, connect with the rhythm of the music, dance with the whole body, and shine with charisma and confidence. Students will learn self-hypnosis techniques for banishing stage fright, enjoying practice, and employing mental rehearsal, which studies have shown to be essentially as effective as physical rehearsal.  Please bring a yoga mat/cushion for your seating comfort while on the floor - for those not comfortable on the floor - there will be a few chairs available. Students will leave class feeling like they've had a weekend at the spa! An optional reinforcement CD will be available after class for a modest fee.

GODDESS MYCHELE

Goddess Mychele

Mychele, unbeknownst to her, began her henna training as a young girl getting in trouble for doodling on herself with pens and markers. Many years later, when she saw henna for the first time on a troupe of belly dancers, the magical connection was made. Her love of henna has taken her all over the United States learning and teaching the art of henna and its history, as well as creating her special recipe that is made with all natural ingredients and pure essential oils. Mychele has been commissioned and fashioned her creative henna designs on hundreds of patrons at the House of Blues, Walt Disney World, Gaylord Palms, The Peabody, Universal Studios Islands of Adventure and Sea World Orlando. She has also toured from coast to coast with Simon d'Tour Live. Her specialty is in using henna to create an experience which includes re-laxation and stress relief through aromatherapy, life coaching, positive energy exchange (which she calls "Henergy"), symbolic designs for health and healing, and making and using only her own henna for her clients. Mychele's ability to combine henna with her in depth knowledge of belly dancing, acting and stage make-up, has made her a favorite henna artist throughout the belly dancing community. Because she understands the unique needs of a performer, Mychele has become an expert at creating customized designs that capture the performers personality while enhancing their costumes, a spectacular combination. Along with many local and regional belly dancers, Mychele has also been honored to be commissioned to create her henna designs for Carolina Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance, Belly Dance Superstar Rachel Brice, Megha Gavin of Devyani Dance and Zymirrah of Urban Gypsy. She approaches her workshops with the same passion and positive energy, a powerful combination not to be missed. You can visit her on the web and experience the beauty of her henna artwork at : http://goddesshenna.com

TRYBE HABIBI BIZARRE

  Habibi Bizarre Habibi Bizarre

Trybe Habibi Bizarre

Directed by Mistress Ilea McGee, Trybe Habibi Bizarre has been making its place in the tribal belly dance community since 2007, while sharing this style with its own South Louisiana dance family. THB specializes in improvisational tribal style belly dance (ITS) using a unique vocabulary of movements created and inspired by ingredients gathered through the trybe's studies of many different styles of world and fusion dance. Being of true Cajun fashion, the only thing to do with these ingredients was to combine them in a " jambalaya" we call THB format. We embrace the sisterhood created through group improvisation and use the energy we share in practice and performance to nurture and grow as a group, and love sharing that concept through teaching and performing. Our style ranges from the slow, dark and creepy of the swamp to the fast, light and fluffy of a New Orleans parade, making us ready for anything! We also now have the musical addition of D.T.I, trybe's very own amazing drum ensemble, the heartbeat of THB.

The Trybe is excited to have added to its resume performing at festivals such as 3rd Coast Tribal, TribalCon, Cues & Tattoos and were thrilled to be awarded 1st place in the troupe competition at Spirit of the Tribes 2010.

Silvia Salamanca

Silvia Salamanca is an internationally acclaimed performer and instructor from Mallorca, Spain. A life-long dancer, she graduated at the age of nineteen as a major in ballet and performed professionally as a modern dancer in major Europe festivals with the contemporary dance company of the University of Barcelona.

She started her career as a belly dancer in 2001, when realizing the enormous benefits that this art form brings to women in both body and soul. In her own studio, she keeps observing how women can get closer to their self identity and discover oneself in a new level, increasing self-esteem, and getting deeply in touch with the feminine essence in their soul through belly dance.

As a natural evolution in her journey, Silvia discovered tribal fusion in the USA and combined it with a deep research into her own cultural roots: Spanish gypsy and Arabic. Hence with her work in the field of Zambra Mora (Spanish gypsy-oriental dance fusion) Silvia gained international recognition and is currently invited to teach workshops and perform in major festivals world wide, including being twice a member of the judging panel for the contest of the Bellydancer of the world. In order to reach as many students as possible, Silvia is proud to present 2 instructional Zambra Mora DVDs.

Silvia is also the director of Shunyata Belly Dance, a nationally awarded tribal fusion company and a proud member of Urban Gypsy, Houston's premiere ATS troupe. Silvia's activities are based in Houston, and there you can find her performing regularly in a variety of venues, including the House of Blues, and offering regular classes.

Since then, their work together has encompassed several styles, including Improvisational Tribal, Spanish/Flamenco Fusion, and most notably, Modern Fusion. Individually, they are international instructors and performers in the Egyptian, Tribal Fusion, and Spanish Gypsy styles. Together, they have taken their dance to a new level, pioneering a groundbreaking blend of Modern and Middle Eastern dance that has been met with acclaim. Their work has broken barriers and brought folkloric art into a modern context. Believing that you have to know the rules to break the rules, Sahira and Silvia are expanding boundaries and creating new ways of expression for dancers everywhere.
